Taking the First Steps

Welcome to another Wyld Wyrds blog. So here we are again and this is the moment we've all been waiting for!! The plan for this 64 year old guy to attempt to get into a form of Bruce Lee shape! Can it be done?!

Ok...to start off...I'm just going to put it out there. This morning I weighed in at 195 lbs. That'd down about 25 pounds from where I was a year ago but nowhere near what I should be. A quick check online shows that someone my age and 5' 7" should weigh about 145 pounds. That's another 50 pounds! If you look at the weight range it says 118.1 - 159.6 lbs. Hmmm. Ok. I've actually lost this much weight in the past when I first went vegetarian and was working out a lot so this is doable. The downside is that it's another 8+ years down the road!!

A quick check online shows that at 32 years old Bruce Lee was between 5'7" and 5'8" so my height. His weight was anywhere from 130 to 165 at one point when he'd bulked up for his last movie, Enter The Dragon. Most sources have him averaging around 140 so that's fairly close, within 5 lbs.

I'm looking at a 50 lb. weight loss. But it's not just losing the weight, it's doing the additional work to put my sad body back into some kind of shape. Obviously not the prime example that Bruce was but something that could pass for a healthy bod. Lol...this could go wrong in so many ways!!!

Now...the plan.

As mentioned in the last post I'm already a vegan. We make most of our meals from fresh. We buy very little in the way of prepackaged plant-based products. My biggest issue with food is...I like to eat and enjoy all the incredible flavors we've discovered so portion control will be key. Going back for seconds will be a no-no...and the first helping will be a regular portion. I firmly believe we eat too much all the time and I feel that the human body runs better when it's running lean. If you give a car too much gas it will just flood out and not run!!

Food/nutrition is covered. Now for the exercise part. First and foremost the plan of action calls for:

Movement..If in doubt…MOVE!

Multiple small meals a day to feed the beast.

Drink tea or water...Stay hydrated. (I'm going to try avoiding alcohol: beer, wine & cider. I don't do hard liquor anymore.)

Limit oil, salt & sugar. This is a key concept to combat heart disease, diabetes and more.

Flexibility. Maybe some yoga...

MOVE!

If you haven't looked it up yet try searching for MovNat. (movnat.com) It's all about natural movement and I think it will be key to achieving my goals without the use of a gym or machines. The only piece of kit I may purchase is a medicine ball. (Throwing rocks around the house might not go over very well!)

I do plan to visit with a doctor before I begin this to just do it the right way but I need to find a physician that has a clue about the importance of nutrition and isn't just a pill pusher. That doesn't fly anymore. When you have an illness that can easily be managed or cured by just changing your diet, why push a pill? (I know...money). Doesn't make sense to me but there it is.

Here we go then. I will begin this next phase on Monday morning and get a doctors appointment when I can so a bit of the cart before the horse...but the point is it's time to start. I'll check in every couple of days more to keep me honest about things that for your reading pleasure! If you enjoy it, that's a bonus. If you decide to follow suit...BIG BONUS for both of us.

Until next time, cheers!
